Taking good care of your teeth, gums and overall oral health is important to a plan for staying in good physical condition and guarding against some serious diseases.  We are told over and again how brushing our teeth and flossing are essential to keeping our teeth strong and functional.  The way we go about it however, may be just as significant.

Brushing after every meal used to be the criteria but we all know that isn’t a very realistic expectation, especially for our children.  Every time you brush your teeth you’re contributing to the program but most dental hygienists do recommend that patients brush at least twice a day for two minutes at a time for the best results.

Flossing is a hard sell – many people just don’t like to do it but some lack the dexterity to maneuver the floss efficiently.  Fortunately there are several over the counter products available today that will make flossing easier.

Typically, flossing involves measuring out just the right length of dental floss and working it around each and every tooth.  The floss may shred and get stuck between that teeth causing discomfort and discouraging the effort.  Ready made flossers and water piks can make the job a whole lot easier.

The main purpose for brushing and flossing is to remove the tiny particles of food that may get trapped in the nooks and crannies of our teeth and mix with bacteria to create harmful plaque.  Any product improvement that can encourage people to keep up the effort to keep their teeth as clean as possible is a plus.  Flavored toothpastes and kid-friendly toothbrushes have proven to be good incentives.  Just make sure that your toothpaste and mouthwash contains fluoride.
