Dental Sealants in Spokane Valley, WA
Some of our younger patients are particularly susceptible to tooth decay. Once we have determined that this is the fact we may recommend the extra protection that dental sealants can provide.
A sealant is a plastic coating that when hardened forms a barrier that will help to block out cavity causing bacteria. Sealants are most often applied to the back molars, those teeth that are designed to do most of the work when it comes to chewing or crunching our food. The pits and grooves ingrained in the molars make them perfect for their job, but they also make it harder for a toothbrush to reach left behind food particles that can lead to tooth decay. This is where a sealant can be put to good use.
Placing a sealant is a simple process that is done right in the office and does not require a special appointment. Once the tooth is cleaned and prepared we paint the coating right onto the surface of the tooth and wait a few seconds for it to solidify.
We suggest that sealants be placed as soon as the molars erupt. You can expect an application to be good for up to ten years with regular monitoring.
